Day 23 – Mansilla de las Mulas to La Virgen del Camino (June 18)

Map: Day 23

Today was another long day. We wanted to walk past Leon since we figured that’s where most people would be stopping. We started the day with a typical breafast of toast and coffee.  Toast? Seriously? How is that supposed to sustain you for all of the walking? We already planned to make another stop in an hour for something more substantial.

The walk today was not very scenic. It was along one of the major highways.  Leon was beautiful. I wanted to go into the cathedral but by the time we got there, it was closed for the siesta hours. Bummer! It didn’t open back up until 4 and we did momentarily comtemplate staying in Leon but at this point, I think we’re both tired and just want to finish so we can have some relaxation days at the end. So we marched forward through similar landscape as the morning.

We were happy to arrive at the albergue! Unfortunately we didn’t realize there was no restaurant nearby so we’re hoping that all of the people who went to the store and bought food to cook with will have some leftovers.  Otherwise we found some pesto in what appears to be the community refrigerator and some pasta that previous pilgrims left behind. I think that will be dinner because we’re just too damn tired to walk back to the closest restaurant. Where’s pizza delivery when you need it?!?

Buen Camino!

  1. Monica says:

Ouch! Heather’s blisters made me cringe. And just knowing how long the days have been for you guys (how far you’re traveling each day) makes me feel for her 😦 But I look and see how far Zubiri is from where you are now on your journey and W-O-W!!! You’re over the hump…and getting closer to Santiago each day.

Was it exciting today?? I read that Spain has a new king!
