Day 13 – Villambistia to Atapuerca (June 8)

Map: Day 13

Today was another day where we left early and got to see what was left of the sunrise. We spent the first part of the day walking with Doris and Ian but we were too slow and they eventually moved ahead.

The path through the “forest” seemed to go on forever. During this time, we caught up with the Oregon ladies who we hadn’t see in a few days.  And there was a big ass hill that we had to climb…ugh!

When we got to Atapuerca, we splurged on a private room with a bathroom. It really wasn’t that much more expensive that paying for two beds so it seemed silly not to.

Just outside of Atapuerca, there’s an excavation site that has the earliest human remains every discovered in Europe dating back over 900,000 years so a few of us (Oregon ladies, Marta, Doris, Ian) hopped a bus and went to check it out. The guide only spoke Spanish so it was very hard to understand. Marinela (Venezulean “Oregon” lady) provided some tranlations for us.

The excavation site was followed up by dinner and then after dinner, the bar owner made everyone sing. The Americans sang “Row Row Row Your Boat” very very badly. We have the video to prove it but I hesitate to share it.

Buen Camino!
