Map: Day 31
We started the day with breakfast in Fonfria. We got real omelettes! Ok, maybe it was just eggs with cheese on top but it was a nice change of pace from the tortilla.
Then it was on to Triacastela, our first stop of the day and a bit of a descent. Today was a day of baby animals…baby cows and the cutest litter of puppies. They tried to escape and follow us. After Triacastela, we had an option or “choose your own adventure”. The route through Samos was flatter and 6+ km longer. That’s at least an hour more of walking. We opted for the shorter walk through San Xil even though there was a bit of hill. We had to share the road with some cows coming down from the opposite direction.
We stopped for lunch in Furela and then continued on to Sarria. In order to get the compostela (i.e certificate for walking the Camino), you only have to do the last 100 km. Even though Sarria is 112 km from the end, we heard that this is a popular place for people to start. Because of this, we contemplated walking to the next town beyond Sarria but our feet said otherwise. As it turns out, we had no problem finding an albergue because there are a million of them (exaggeration).
Heather checked in via Facebook with Alex and Liz to find out where they and their crew were. They were at an albergue just up the road and invited us over to help finish off the large amount of food they had prepared for dinner. It worked out perfectly! We then took a quick stroll through town, caught up with Robert from California and saw a small Gaelic band walking through the streets playing music.
The best part of this journey really has been meeting a great group of people. I’m not sure that I’ll have any major epiphanies in the next few days and that’s alright with me. That’s not why I went on this adventure.
It’s almost 10:30 and there are still quite a few people moving around. That is quite unusual. Most are in bed between 9 and 10. And since I’m in the hallway with the light on, I shall bring this entry to an end.
Buen Camino!
Getting close!
