Day 17 – Itero de la Vega to Fromista (June 12)

Map: Day 17

Because we knew we didn’t have far to go today, we took our time getting out of bed. We had an “English” breakfast, which included sausage (i.e hot dogs), bacon, fried eggs, toast and beggar Nina. She’s the owner’s dog and was incredibly sweet. She looked a lot like a mini Chewbacca. He kept running her off so she’d stop begging but as soon as he went back inside, she was back at our table. It was quite amusing.

After finishing breakfast, we headed out the door. Once again, we were the last pilgrims to leave. Today’s walk was completely flat, just like the next few days. It’s been quite warm and there aren’t a lot of trees to provide shade. Before we got to our first stop of the day, Boadilla del Camino, we came across Nev laying on the side of the road. We met Nev a few days ago in Granon. He started his walk in Prague. Our paths have overlapped for the past few days. That’s sort of how the life of a pilgrim goes. For a few days, you seem the same people over and over. And then as people’s paces change, you start seeing new faces. We’re still hoping to catch up with Keith and Pauline at some point. They’re about a day ahead of us and we’ve been keeping in touch via email and Instagram.

Tonight we’re staying in a hotel in Fromista which is quite a few steps up from an albergue. Tomorrow we’ll take a rest day and hopefully the “magic” cream Heather got from the pharmacy will speed up the recovery of her blisters so she’s not in so much pain. Depending on the weather, we’re thinking about starting our walk tomorrow night under the light of the almost full moon.

As I sit here writing this, a thunderstorm is blowing through. We haven’t seen rain in a while and I love the sound of thunder. There’s something ironically peaceful about it.

Buen Camino!

  1. I’m not so sure the magic cream worked very well!
